The Main Facades of the Führerbau

The Führerbau of the New Reich Chancellery extended from the inner Court of Honor on Wilhelmstraße to the Reich Chancellery building at Voßstraße No. 6. Despite the Führerbau’s enormous size, only an elongated, doorless structure with a plain facade was visible from Voßstraße. The Führerbau held a unique position within the New Reich Chancellery complex, as this section housed the offices of Adolf Hitler and his closest associates. However, the majority of the Führerbau consisted of ceremonial rooms where Adolf Hitler staged his public persona as the „Führer.“ Because the Führerbau was the most important component of the New Reich Chancellery, Albert Speer designed its facades to stand out architecturally from the rest of the complex. This volume describes the main facades of the Führerbau as well as the Court of Honor that Speer had constructed in front of the building on Voßstraße. In addition to the architectural features of the Führerbau, the book covers the operation and use of the entrances to the five air-raid shelters and the vehicle lift that allowed cars to enter the New Reich Chancellery’s underground facilities.

The “Work Analysis” book series

This book series presents an architectural analysis of the works created by the various architects involved in the Reich Chancellery. The volumes are illustrated with numerous color computer-generated images and historical photographs. Christoph Neubauer created the computer graphics to visualize areas of the Reich Chancellery that were not documented in historical photographs. This allows the author to present every architectural detail described in the text through detailed color illustrations. The series focuses on analyzing the architecture of the Reich Chancellery. The individual volumes are strictly categorized by architect, period of creation, and building section. As there is no prescribed reading order, readers are free to arrange the books according to these categories themselves.
